Orange and T Mobile to set up Mobile TV tests in London

News from the BBC, now, about a trial scheme Orange and T Mobile have gotten into bed for, to test out Mobile TV in our nation’s fair (well, smoggy) capital city, London.

First trialled in Bristol in 2006, the new TDtv system promises to bring high-definition content to customers’ phones, directly through their 3G connection, the goal being to provide a service with 24 TV channels and 10 digital radio stations, straight to users’ phones.

Now, having tried Mobile TV on my second phone (my W950i), I know that it is really rather good. But it can be a bit choppy (which is annoying when you’re halfway through watching a Nightwish video on Kerrang), so I’m all for this trial, and I sincerely hope it gets rolled out across the country really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really soon.

In the words of the Dire Straits song, “I want my, I want my, I want my MTVeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee…”

Sony Ericsson W910i wins phone of the year award at MWC

Yep, that’s right, according to Mobile Today, the award for the best handset of the year, at the 13th annual GSM Association awards, goes to: the Sony Ericsson W910i.

Judges described it as a “superb all-rounder”, and it won because of its gorgeous, easy to use design. In the world of mobile phones, the other one that got highly commended was the 3 Skypephone, for its range of superb features that you don’t normally see on a phone in that price range.

Not least of which is the Skype access, I would imagine.

But anyway, no doubt about it, this is the W910i’s show, so let’s all give a big round of applause to this beauty!

We’ll see if Sony Ericsson can win it next year as well…

Motorola
Why, Motorola, why? Why do you tease us with goodness only to deny us?
It’s never nice seeing a big company get it wrong so big time, but it’s becoming glaringly obvious that Motorola are fast becoming the Britney Spears of the mobile world…

LG

We’re on safer ground here, as LG have already announced, ahead of the Congress, what one of their main phones will be, the LG KF510 TH (pictured). Basically, think LG Shine, with a new, shiny, touchpad interface, and you’ll not be far off. Oh, and speaking of touchpads, it’s very, very, very heavily rumoured (ie/ come on, we all know it’s going to happen…), that we’ll be getting the LG Venus. Since we already have the Venus on site, take it as read it’ll happen.

Nokia

Nokia buys Trolltech and blows a raspberry at Android

Nokia, the Finnish mobile phone giant, have announced their acquisition (I love that word, it sounds like I’m a fighter pilot acquiring a target) of software company Trolltech, according to this story from Engadget Mobile. Which might not sound like that big a deal, until you realise the implications of it…

First of all, you need to consider the question: who are Trolltech? Easy enough to answer, that one, they’re a software company, who specialise in Linux-based software (that you may well have come into contact with, as it’s used in Skype and Google Earth). They’ve also been pioneering the use of Linux, a gorgeous, super-fast operating system, on mobile phones. And crucially, they’re part of the LiMo Foundation.

The what, now?

The LiMo Foundation, a group of companies dedicated to bring a completely open source, Linux-based operating system into a vast range of mobile phones. Now, where have we heard that before?

Yep, that’s right, they’re setting out to outdo Android, before it even hits the shelves. And that’s where it gets interesting, because the deal means Nokia are now putting their considerable might behind the competition to Android. Which means one thing:

Fight!

So, not only will the purchase of Trolltech allow them to revamp and reinvigorate the Symbian operating system, but it will also let them take the battle straight to Android’s doorstep.

Which means 2008 is going to be an even more vicious war between all the mobile phone makers, than even we predicted!

Samsung “Secret Color” Mobile Phones

I found a story on Mobile Whack, today, about Samsung’s latest phones for its home turf, the Korean market. Called the “Secret Color” series, they look like any other slidephone would, when they’re closed. Pretty sleek, and I have to say, when they’re closed, they’re really good-looking phones. However, the shock comes when you slide one open, and see the keypad.

I predict your reaction will be, “Whoa! Bright!”

Y’see, as you can see from the pic, the Samsung Secret Color phones are 2-tone. So, imagine them as kind of a red and beige Vauxhall Nova (Ok, weird analogy, I know, but you know what I mean). From the outside, they’re pretty normal looking phones, albeit very sleek, and definitely in keeping with Samsung’s design ethos. But the keypad, the hidden bit giving the Secret Color line its name, is bright blue. Or pink. Or green, or red.

But the key thing is, WHOA, IT’S BRIGHT! Oddly enough, I can see this phone doing well, because some of the colour combinations do look damn stunning (the blue and white one), although, granted, the blue and pink one looks like Barbie’s hand-me-downs.

The other big surprise is the spec of the phone, since it sounds really rather high-tech. There’s no word on what camera it has, but the specs say it has internet access with speeds up to 7.2Mbps. Which is chuffin’ fast, however you look at it.

It seems a shame, then, that we’re unlikely to see them over here, but hey, you never know. It would be quite nice if they make it these shores.

Because the blue and white one really is gorgeous…
